British National (Overseas) Visa – Overview
The British National (Overseas) visa allows BN(O) status holders and their close family members to live, work, and study in the UK. It was introduced in response to the situation in Hong Kong, providing a route to settlement and British citizenship.

Who Can Apply?
You can apply for a BN(O) visa if:

  • You are a British National (Overseas) (BN(O)) citizen
  • You are 18 years or older
  • You are ordinarily resident in Hong Kong, the UK, or the Crown Dependencies at the time of application
  • You can support and accommodate yourself and any dependants for at least 6 months
  • You can prove your relationship to any accompanying family members (partner/spouse, children under 18, and in some cases, adult children and their families)

Eligible Family Members
You may include the following in your application:

  • Spouse or partner
  • Children under 18
  • Adult children (born after July 1, 1997) and their partners/children (in exceptional circumstances)
  • Other family members in exceptional cases where they are highly dependent on the BN(O) applicant

Visa Length & Options
You can apply for either:

  • 2.5 years (renewable)
  • 5 years (recommended for those aiming for settlement)

Costs
Visa Fee:

  • 2.5-year visa: £193 per person
  • 5-year visa: £268 per person

Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS):

  • £1,035 per year (per adult)
  • £776 per year (per child)
  • What You Can Do on a BN(O) Visa
    Live, work, and study in the UK
  • Use the NHS (after paying the IHS)
  • Apply for settlement after 5 continuous years
  • Apply for British citizenship 1 year after settlement

🚫 What You Cannot Do

  • Claim public funds (benefits, housing support, etc.)
  • Work as a professional sportsperson or coach

📝 Key Requirements

  • BN(O) status (you don’t need a valid BN(O) passport, just proof of status)
  • Evidence of residence in an eligible location
  • Proof of relationships (if applying with dependants)
  • Proof of ability to financially support yourself

🛂 Path to Settlement and Citizenship
After 5 continuous years in the UK, you can apply for:

  • Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), if you:
  • Meet the continuous residence requirement (no more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12-month period)
  • Pass the Life in the UK test
  • Meet the English language requirement (B1 level)
  • British citizenship after 12 months of ILR, subject to eligibility.
