International Sportsperson Visa – Overview
The UK International Sportsperson visa is for elite athletes or qualified coaches who are internationally recognized and can make a significant contribution to the development of their sport at the highest level in the UK.
 
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the UK International Sportsperson visa, you must meet the following criteria:
 
  • Sports Governing Body Letter: Provide a letter from the relevant UK sports governing body confirming you are internationally recognized and will significantly contribute to the sport’s development at the highest level in the UK.
  • Sponsorship: Have a valid certificate of sponsorship from a Home Office-licensed sponsor.
  • Role Commitment: Genuinely intend to take up the role and not pursue any alternative employment.
  • English Language: Demonstrate English language skills at A1 level or above in listening and speaking, unless exempt or if your visa duration is 12 months or less.
  • Tuberculosis (TB) Test: Provide evidence of a clear TB test if you have lived in a country listed by UKVI for at least 6 months before applying.
  • Financial Requirements: Show you have at least £1,270 in available funds, or your sponsor must confirm they will support and accommodate you for the first month of employment, ensuring at least £1,270. If you’ve been in the UK for 1 year at the time of application, this may not apply.
 
Additional Requirements for Minors
If you are under 18 on the date of your application, you must provide:
 
  • Written consent from both parents or one parent (if they have sole legal responsibility), or from a legal guardian, supporting:
  • Your application for the visa
  • Your living and care arrangements in the UK
  • Your travel and reception in the UK (if applying for entry clearance)
 
Visa Duration
  • Up to 1 year: If your visa is for entry clearance or a stay of 12 months or less.
  • Up to 3 years: For longer stays.
 
Visa Restrictions
The UK International Sportsperson visa does not allow you to:
 
  • Access public funds
  • Change employment
  • However, you can:
  • Study, subject to an ATAS condition
  • Volunteer in your free time
  • Work out a contractual notice period
  • Represent your national team when they are in the UK
  • Participate in British University and College Sport (BUCS) competitions
  • Accept temporary engagements as a sports broadcaster (e.g., guest expert commentary)
  • Supplement your sponsored role with other work, as long as you remain in your primary sponsored job
 
Settlement Eligibility
After spending 5 continuous years in the UK (including time on certain other visas), you may be eligible to apply for settlement, provided you meet these requirements:
 
  • Pass the Life in the UK test
  • Achieve B1 level English in speaking and listening, unless exempt”
